Transforming Manufacturing

Our Journey From Vision to Innovation

At our core, we’re all about unlocking new possibilities in manufacturing. Seeing industry challenges, we created solutions to help teams improve manufacturing lead times and production challenges with additive technology — without sacrificing performance. Whether you want to reinvent your existing machine tools or design a custom solution, we’re here to help you elevate your manufacturing potential!

What Was the Problem?

Since the early 1990s, research has highlighted the potential of combining additive techniques with milling. Yet, despite this promise and a few successes, there were no commercial solutions for mainstream CNC machines to add metal — until we stepped in.

How Did We Solve It?

In 2007, De Montfort University’s additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing lab began to use a high-speed milling machine. We implemented additive and this combination of additive and subtractive technologies led to a 4-year UK research project called RECLAIM (Re-manufacturing of high-value products using a Combined Laser Cladding, Inspection and Machining System). To create a more practical solution, we developed a suite of deposition heads that could be added to CNC machines without changing its structure. This research led to the development of our AMBIT™ tool-changeable deposition system. By 2013, Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies was turning this innovation into a commercial reality.

Key Milestones in Our History

Dr. Jason Jones and Peter Coates founded Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies in the UK in 2012 and in the U.S. in 2013. But our story doesn’t start or end there. Explore the milestones that define our journey:

2007

Our founders developed a practical hybrid manufacturing approach by combining additive technology with CNC machining.

2008

We secured a ~$1.5 million grant to develop the RECLAIM laser-based hybrid CNC system.

2012

We launched the world’s first additive deposition heads (DED) for milling machines and Dr. Jason B. Jones presented RECLAIM at the Solid Freeform Fabrication Conference. Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies Ltd was also founded in the UK.

2013

Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies LLC was established in the U.S. We also introduced the world’s first commercial hybrid CNC, the Hybrid HSTM1000, in partnership with Hamuel Reichenbacher, at the EMO exhibition — the largest machine tool show globally.

2014

We launched the redesigned AMBIT™ interchangeable DED heads. We also unveiled the INTEGREX i-400AM, the world’s first hybrid CNC with multiple deposition heads, in collaboration with Mazak At JIMTOF.

2015

Our AMBIT™ equipment and automated remanufacturing process earned GE Energy certification for blade repair. We also updated the INTEGREX i-400AM with Mazak and won the 2015 International Additive Manufacturing Award.

2016

Dr. Jason Jones secured a €6 million research grant, and working with Mitsui Seiki, introduced the Vertex 55X-H — a new high-precision machine for 5-axis milling and additive manufacturing. We also launched the Hybrid HSTM 150 HD with Hamuel, the first machine to combine automatic workpiece changeovers with interchangeable heads.

2017

We partnered with ROMI to deliver the Romi DCM 620-5X Hybrid at EXPOMAFE, South America’s largest machine tool show. We also introduced the AMBIT™ EDDY for automated eddy current testing and launched the AMH-630 hybrid machine with Tongtai.

2018

We integrated the AMBIT™ Multi-R onto a Fanuc Robot and, in collaboration with Mazak, introduced the INTEGREX i400S AM featuring a new head system. We also launched the AMBIT™ XTRUDE, the HMT Global material extrusion head developed for 3D printing polymers.

2019

We introduced the AMBIT™ SCAN laser scanner, updated the AMBIT™ EDDY for better production and modern industry needs, and rebranded the company.

2020

During COVID-19 shortages, we developed ‘AXIOM,’ a method merging 3D printing flexibility with injection molding benefits.

2021

AMBIT™ EHLA (Extreme High-speed Laser Addition) head is released to provide precise, high-rate area deposition, particularly well-suited for rapidly applying ultra-thin metal coatings.

2022

Nikon Corporation invests in HMT Global via its Next Generation Project Division.

2024

HMT Global relocates to a new Advanced Manufacturing Center and Showroom in McKinney, TX.

2024

HMT Global further expands into the European Market by launching a new office located in The Netherlands
