Bringing Classics Back to Life — Fuel-Injection Space Cam Remanufacturing

Background

The Bosch fuel-injection “space cam” was developed in the 1960s to precisely time fuel delivery—powering classics like the 1970 Le Mans-winning Porsche 917.
When Bosch discontinued production in the 1990s, restorers faced the challenge of finding reliable replacements for these highly precise components.

The Challenge

Recreate the complex 3D surface exactly as the original, ensuring uncompromised material quality, despite discontinued supply and the high functional tolerances required for optimal fuel injection.

Our Solution

Hybrid Manufacturing Technologies Global teamed with Hexagon to laser-scan a pristine original using an Absolute Arm directly into DESIGNER software. A faithful 3D CAD model was created and toolpaths generated with EDGECAM.

Using a hybrid CNC powered by our AMBIT™ Laser Metal Deposition (LMD), the worn areas were rebuilt and finish-milled — all in a single setup.

This process delivered like-new components with superior metallurgical quality. Our AMBIT™ LMD technology meets or surpasses the original properties while also supporting a wider selection of alloys.

Results

  • ⏱ < 1 day turnaround from scan to finished part

  • ⚙️ 100% engine performance restored

  • 🛠 1 setup for scanning, LMD, and milling on a hybrid CNC

  • 🔬 High metallurgical quality and enhanced material selection

What the customer said
